Students from Sawyers Hall College in Brentwood, Essex, built on their knowledge of construction and the environment last week during a special visit to a Countryside Properties’ development, Saffron Green on Peaslands Road in Saffron Walden.
The visit was organised by Countryside Properties and CITB-Construction Skills to teach students about the business side of the construction industry, and the various environmental issues surrounding new developments. The visit was the next stage of a Citizenship and Enterprise event, for which over 100 students planned their own development, based on the original site at Saffron Green. The winning teams visited the site and participated in a workshop led by David Aplin, Development Manager for Saffron Green.
Tony Groom, head of construction at Sawyers Hall College, said; “this visit has been an excellent way to teach the students about the business side of the construction industry and the issues facing any new development. The students have really been looking forward to seeing a live development in progress.”
David Aplin from Countryside Properties said “These students represent the people who will be responsible for designing our future environment and for helping to drive the construction industry forward. Days like today are all about encouraging these young people to be inspired to join the industry and also to highlight why issues surrounding sustainability and construction are so important”.
Janice Graham-Wilson from CITB added: “We must look to the next generation and we want to make children aware of the challenges and rewards that the construction industry can offer. For students who want a career in the construction industry, tours such as this are exactly what they need.”
The East of England needs an estimated 14,590 people to join the construction industry every year for the next four years in order to keep up with expected demand.
