PERIOD PROPERTY: THE WELL-GROOMED THIRTIES
Mill Rise, Mill Hill, London - 17/07/08

Now labelled 'period', 1930s homes are often more stylish and spacious than their Victorian counterparts.

Admitting to liking 1930s houses feels almost like a guilty secret. Synonymous with the kind of suburban scene popularised by The Good Life, standard sturdy Thirties homes have never held the status enjoyed by their Georgian or Victorian counterparts. Yet increasingly, Londoners are finding that homes built in that decade are spacious, adaptable - and more affordable than their highly sought-after older cousins. But as their popularity grows, so does their cost.

At Mill Hill, Preston Bennett is selling rare bungalows from the era, which have been given a modern makeover.

In a conservation area, these listed buildings at Mill Rise formerly belonged to the Retail Trust, a charity for employees and former employees in the retail industry. They are now an age-exclusive development aimed at the over-55s, priced from £315,000. The developer, Countryside Properties, says the bungalows are the perfect blend for fans of Thirties housing who want contemporary interiors.

Managing director Chris Crook says: "We've even preserved period features, including the plaques on the building that bear the names of benefactors such as Mr Selfridge and Mr Harrod, but inside have given them a makeover. Opportunities to buy bungalows, let alone Thirties ones, are exceptionally rare in London."
