Last Saturday morning I joined 21 other Countryside staff and guests on our first ever ‘Tour de Sites’ charity cycling event – our very own mini Tour de France! Kitted out in our branded cycling gear we took to the roads, cycling 92km along part of the Tour de France route passing several of Countryside’s new and existing developments from Cambridge through to Chelmsford.

Successful completion of our ‘Tour de Sites’ charity cycle event - by Graham Cherry

With a real mix of abilities taking part, we decided it was best to stick together as much as possible and help one another out, especially when it came to a few flat tyres!

We set off early from Cambridge station, together with a number of guests from our sub-contractors, agents and suppliers. The first of our developments we came to was our new project known as Aura, quickly followed by Abode. They are both part of Great Kneighton in Cambridge, where the design of the new homes is looking really impressive.

Next we passed a new site of ours in Saffron Walden and then it was onto our new scheme in Takeley, named Friars Place, which is launching in the Autumn. Saturday was sadly not the sunniest we’ve seen in June, and we were hit with a downpour just as we left Priors Green in Takeley where we had a much needed pit stop at the new Sugars Café that has opened up in the busy village centre there.

Next we headed towards our established community at Great Notley in Braintree which incorporates its own cycleway network, a well-used feature of many of our major developments.

We completed the course at Beaulieu in Chelmsford, where we were greeted by warm weather and a BBQ with family and friends joining us to celebrate the successful completion of our ‘Tour de Sites’.

Raising money for Little Haven’s Hospice and the NSPCC, the ‘Tour de Sites’ event took a total of 5 hours and raised just over £2,400 which was matched by Countryside to give a total of £4,800.

I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part. All the cyclists had such a positive attitude and were in great spirits, which meant the determination to finish the ‘Tour de Sites’ in an impressive time was achieved. There were many personal bests on the day.

It was a very good day for a very worthwhile cause!

If you are able to donate via Just Giving we’d really appreciate it.
