Helping your children fly the nest can be a rewarding experience, and receiving financial support from family is becoming an increasingly popular way to get onto the housing ladder. Research from Legal & General revealed that 62% of under 35s received support to purchase their home. With a little help from their parents, first time buyers, Natasha Housman (25), and boyfriend Nick Hooper (26) secured a two-bedroom apartment at Horsted Park in Chatham, Kent and also took advantage of Countryside’s Bank of Mum and Dad scheme.
Homebuyers whose family members support them by putting a deposit down on a Countryside home, are eligible for the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ scheme. In appreciation of this act of generosity, on completion Countryside will gift £2,000 back to the parent or family member who provided the deposit as a thank you.
Natasha says: “Initially we considered renting, however Nick and I decided that we wanted to pay towards a mortgage, rather than just paying rent aimlessly. After living separately with our parents and saving for five years towards a deposit, we finally decided that it was time to start looking for a place of our own. Between us we had saved over £15,000 and my parents were willing to contribute 5%. When we found out about Countryside’s Bank of Mum and Dad scheme, we were really impressed. My parents loved the idea, and were keen to help us out since they would receive £2,000 back afterwards.”
Natasha and Nick also took advantage of the Help to Buy scheme, which is available on a number of properties at Horsted Park. Natasha says: “We wouldn’t have been able to buy the home we wanted without the Help to Buy scheme, the equity loan made homeownership far more achievable. We thought that we were going to be counting the pennies when paying our mortgage, but our payments are affordable, so we can enjoy ourselves just as much as we used to! We were also able to buy a two-bedroom apartment, meaning we have space for a guest, and room for a child if he had one in the future.”
Horsted Park is a collection of one and two-bedroom apartments, and three and four-bedroom houses, perfect for a variety of buyers, from those searching to get onto the property ladder, or growing families searching to be a part of a vibrant neighbourhood.
Residents benefit from an excellent location, ideally located between Chatham and Rochester town centers. Natasha says: “We were recommended to look at homes in Kent by friends and we were really impressed with the location. Work is a drivable distance for both of us, and a supermarket is a five minute drive away. Rochester is closer by if we need to do a bit more shopping. We also have lots of green space around us, and a children’s play area too, so when my little nephew comes to visit I can take him there.”
All the homes at Horsted Park feature a high quality specification throughout, with spacious open-plan living spaces and meticulous attention to detail throughout. “We have been really impressed with the quality of the build since we’ve moved in, and we were also able to choose the flooring and carpeting before we moved in. Since the apartments come with integrated appliances as standard, we have also saved money we would have spent on buying white goods.”
Horsted Park benefits from excellent transport connections, with Chatham Railway station just two miles away. Frequent and direct services reach London Paddington in 45 minutes. Motorists are well catered for too, the M2 is less than a mile away giving rapid access to the M20, M26, M25, the Dartford Crossing and London Airports, as well as the Channel ports and tunnel.
Natasha concludes: “We would recommend Countryside 100%, they made the entire process totally stress free and were on hand if we ever needed some help. So much so, that I’m trying to get my sister to move into the apartment upstairs!”
Prices at Horsted Park start at £192,500 for a one bedroom Ardingly apartment and £347,500 for a three-bedroom house, with four-bedroom homes starting from from £390,000. The Help to Buy scheme is available on selected properties.
