Welcome to St. Mary’s Island, Chatham Maritime, where Island living and global thinking are working together to create a rich, inspired environment and a community with enviable ‘green credentials’.
St. Mary's Island is a 150 acre residential redevelopment by Countryside Maritime, a joint venture between the Homes and Communities Agency and Countryside that forms part of the 350 acre Chatham Maritime regeneration project. The regeneration of the Island was always going to be more than just a building project. It was going to be a grand scheme to create a new way of life for people who valued the simple things: tranquillity, harmony and community.
St. Mary's Island has the unique distinction of being Britain's first and only strategically planned island community. It is an opportunity to create a benchmark for how homes and communities should be in the future.
See our Current Developments below for the latest availability at St Mary's Island.
Every amenity on St. Mary’s Island has been thought about down to the smallest detail. The isle has its own St. Mary’s Island Church of England primary school, which is also the local church. For your convenience and ease there is also a doctor’s surgery and a pharmacy.
The community centre offers a wide range of activities to local residents such as fitness classes, dance, martial arts and slimming clubs. If you enjoy sailing and boating you will also find the Elite Sailing Club at the marina on the island offering both sailing and motor cruising lessons and training courses.
With superb eating or shopping amenities just a short walk away, treating yourself to lunch overlooking the marina can become a regular indulgence. Start your day with a scenic walk to collect fresh milk and the daily newspaper and take in the views across the river.
On St. Mary's Island, the car is definitely not king – when complete over 20 acres will be dedicated to open space. A network of traffic calmed roads, footpaths and cycleways give priority to cyclists and walkers, with most of the walkways designed to take people through the many green spaces.
Home zones have been created, providing an alternative traffic calming method to speed bumps. These include raised flowerbeds, hedges and other street furniture, designed to reduce local traffic speeds to below 20mph in some areas.
To encourage the use of bicycles, secure storage facilities have been incorporated into every apartment block. The result is a quieter, cleaner and far more relaxed atmosphere on the whole Island. It is this kind of attention to detail that makes St. Mary's Island such a special place to live.
